This region comprises a wide strip at the bottom of the Cordillera de los Andes or Andes Mountain Range and the Aconcagua. The San Juan, Mendoza and Tunuyan rivers descend from its peaks, turning the area into a unique oasis where the grapevine is the main star, though not the only one.

This is one of the principal areas of wine production in the world. Besides, several fruits and vegetables are successfully grown here. The immense natural wealth of the region is complemented by its many different energy resources: petroleum, gas, uranium and hydro electrical energy provided by its plentiful mountain rivers.

Traces from the past can be easily appreciated in these lands, as some of the most important emancipating battles were fought here, during the War of the Independence. The abundance of its food resources has been instrumental for the development of a rich and varied local cuisine.
