Located approximately in the geographic center of the country, because of its intense university activity it is known as "La Docta". Its tourist attractions include colonial and religious buildings, the Manzana and Estancias Jesuiticas (Jesuitic ranches), located in the city and it its surroundings, and which were designated Cultural World Heritage by the UNESCO. Its art, historical and religious museums are another good example of the intense cultural life of the city. Its modern and commercial side can be seen in its downtown streets, filled with stores, popular shopping centers and lively boulevards. Its temples, convents and colonial mansions make up the historical patrimony of the city, mingling with wide and beautiful avenues and flower-filled parks and squares.

Its closeness to the mountain area makes it the perfect starting point for a number of excursions in lakes and dams. Travelling is facilitated by a good network of roads and highways liking the main tourist centers.
