Main city of the west of the province and privileged tourist destination, it provides access to Los Alerces National Park and to the Precordillera or Pre Mountain Range. This is the most important commercial and cattle site of the west of Chubut as well as a center of air and land transport. Traces of the aboriginal cultures that inhabited these lands can still be appreciated, as well as - and closer in Time - samples of the Welsh immigrants who arrived at the beginning of the last century, bringing their customs and traditions with them.
A remarkable attraction is El Viejo Expreso Patagonico La Trochita, a small train (75 centimeters wide) with a steam engine which links this city with Ingeniero Jacobacci in the province of Rion Negro. One of the most popular excursions is the visit to the Cañadon de los Bandidos, ancient refuge used by Butch Cassidy and his followers. |
