  SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA
  • Population: 1,500 inhabitants

Thanks to the remarkable traces left by prehispanic peoples, this place has become a major tourist destination. It was an important center of the Atacameña or Kunza culture until the fifteenth century, when it was conquered by the Inca Empire. It was then used as a path by Spanish expeditions going towards the south of the continent. San Pedro is located in an oasis in the extreme north of the Salar de Atacama. Some of its attractions include an interesting archeological museum with many pre-Columbian pieces and a charming colonial church. Tourists can also visit the prehispanic village of Tulor , the Quitor fortress and many Inca ruins. The Valley of the Moon, the Tatio Geysers and the Salar de Atacama are great samples of natural beauty with easy access in all of them. It is because of this diversity of cultures and variety of attractions that San Pedro has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chile , chosen by people coming from all over the world.
