PUERTO MONTT

  • Population: 110,000 inhabitants
  • Date of Foundation: 1853

As soon as you wake up in this city and look out of the window, you will find a landscape that seems to have been taken out of a postcard. Here, beauty is all around you. If you decide to travel by sea, the magnificence of the volcanoes and snowcapped peaks of the continental part will take your breath away. The same will happen if the destination is the palafittes, picturesque houses supported by wooden columns built by the sea and stroked by smooth waves. Such peace and beauty are overwhelming. This city was founded by German immigrants in the middle of the XIX century and grew with great celerity. At the beginning of the XX century, and thanks to the arrival of the railway, it became a main site for those traveling to Chiloe and Magallanes Islands . In 1960 the city was destroyed by an earthquake, but the effort and spirit of the old colonists fully rebuilt it, and nowadays it displays a strong and steady development, its economy being mainly based upon the production of salmon and the forestry industry. Its transport services and hotel industry are varied and reliable. Its cuisine shows a clear German influence that mingles with the many sea products of the area. Its refined pastry also reminds us of some German recipes.

PUERTO VARAS

  • Population: 28,000 inhabitants
  • Date of Foundation: 1851
  • Distance from Santiago: 1,000 km

Lying beside Llanquihue Lake and just 15 km away from Puerto Montt we find Puerto Vartas, also known as The City of the Roses - a mixture of traditions, beauty and good taste. Just like Puerto Montt, it was founded by the Germans, and since its beginning it was a sailing center and harbour that enabled sailing out of the lake towards neighboring Puerto Montt. Having a good tourist infrastructure, it is the starting point towards a number of destinations where Nature is the distinctive feature. Its popularity began in 1934 with the construction of the Puerto Vartas Great Hotel (currently a casino) and then with the opening of routes towards Ensenada by the south banks of the river, with many camping sites and cabins surrounded by splendid bucolic landscapes as well as the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes.
